How much money can you make from Facebook videos? [and other FAQs]

We answer Facebook monetization questions like How much money can you make from Facebook videos?, does Facebook pay you for views?, and more in this post.

Below we answer most of the questions that folks frequently ask about monetizing videos you have posted on Facebook.

First up is that question on most newcomer’s lips:  How much money can you make from Facebook videos?

How much money can you make from Facebook videos?

Now, we have no specific answer to this question because it depends on a whole range of factors including:

To give you a clear idea, let’s work the potential earnings of content creator Sally, the owner of a FaceBook page SallyDIY.

Sally targets US DIYers, where the CPM is about $5 per 1000 ad impressions (note that the CPM keeps on fluctuating by the day).

As always, Estimated Earnings = Ad Impressions x CPM / 1000

Assuming she received 5000 ad impressions today, her estimated Facebook ad breaks earnings would be 5000x $5/1000 = $25.

Of course, the final Facebook ad breaks payout may be different from this estimate because of adjustments Facebook makes, for example, if some views came from ineligible countries (some countries are not considered) but it gives you a clue.

Bonus tip: Facebook calls them in-stream ads because they play (automatically or manually depending on your Creator Studio settings) during breaks you have included in the video.

As promised at the start, the aim of this post is to answer your most common questions about how to earn money from Facebook videos.

And having tackled the biggest of them all ‘How much money can you make from Facebook videos?’, we can proceed to other questions:

Does Facebook pay you for views?

So, does Facebook pay you for views?

Well, we are afraid that we have no good news about Facebook paying for views.

In short, No!

To be specific, Facebook pays per every 1000 ad impressions on videos and does not base the earnings on your views.

As such, the metric you should be excited about most (if you notice an increase) when logged in to the Creator Studio is the ad impressions, not the million views!

Doesn’t that make the number of views on your videos on Facebook meaningless?

Well, not at all…

So, in what ways do my views count?

Okay, your video views matter in several ways:

Put simply, Facebook doesn’t reward you for views but they’re an important component of the entire Facebook video monetization strategy.

How many views do you need to get paid on Facebook?

Well, there is no minimum number of views required for you to be paid by Facebook- You probably knew that from the answers to the previous question.

However, as we mentioned earlier, it has been a requirement that your videos must have been watched for 180000 minutes (cumulatively) in the past sixty days to be approved for monetization.

The other alternative condition is for you to have hit at least 30000 1-minute views on videos 3 or more minutes long for your page to get the nod.

Of course, the last substitute pre-condition according to Facebook monetization guidelines is garnering 15000 engagements over the same period.

How does Facebook pay you?

Facebook pays its content creators through their bank accounts –you’re asked to enter the details of an account that can receive payouts in USD.

Sadly, Facebook doesn’t pay via PayPal accounts at the moment and you’ll need to use an intermediary bank if your current account is not compliant.

On payment cycles, Facebook pays every month (expect your money around the third week) – and it’s only monies earned in the previous month.

Needless to say, your money may take a couple of days before it reflects in your account especially if you’re from outside the United States-  international payments tend to take added processing time.

It’s also important to note that Facebook pays only if your total revenue reaches $100 USD- your earnings will be continuously rolled over to the next month until you accumulate $100.

Do you get paid for going viral on Facebook?

You won’t love this: Facebook doesn’t pay creators of videos that go viral any extra bonus.

That said, going viral can earn you big rewards if people are watching the in-stream ads – it can trigger a spike in ad impressions meaning more money in the bank for you the next payday.

How much does Facebook pay for live videos?

Facebook announced plans to allow its creators who stream live video to charge viewers for access earlier in 2020 but there are scanty details so far about the rates, the cut the giant will take (if any), or even when the new feature will be rolled out.

This might be a great way- when launched- for creators who love to stream live to make supplemental income from their pages.

Unfortunately, it seems we have to wait to see if it actually becomes a reality to get the answer to the question.
